I'll tell ya why!
With the arts industry (containing contemporary art, entertainment, theatre the like...) being incredibly competitive as it is, and deeply underfunded - it is hard for an artist with a niche specialism to find work in their field, so to increase job security, it is wise to have a broad set of skills. Within my BA (hons) Experimental Arts and Performance degree at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, we were taught to expand our artistic practices across both artistic production, support and creative direction - to make sure we were skilled across other artistic disciplines and find our strengths and weaknesses across all facets of production. This being said, all my skills don't always mesh or fit into 1 page or coherent CV, so I've split them into 3 areas of work I'm applying for as a graduate:
Customer Service in the Arts;
Operations Crew for Theatres and Galleries; and finally as a
Stage Performer.
Whilst this still doesn't cover all my expertise, it refines my work into comprehensive categories. Here I am, playing the game, wearing my wigs and (hopefully) getting employed because of it. Also look how pretty they all are!
